Rare GMC Futurliner on Biglorryblog at the Elmia truck Show! Number 8 awaits restoration in Sweden with interest...
It's amazing where you can find 'hidden' gold! Thanks to that Towering Titan of Truck Tittle-Tattle (AKA NIgel Hanwell) and Volvo Trucks BIglorryblog made it over to the Elmia truck Show in Sweden this weekend where, in an underground show hall, I found this strange beast...yes it's a genuine GMC Futurliner! One of only 12 built, this is number 8 and it's being restored by Jonsson Power in Sweden for a promotional vehicle. Now click through here for more! You can find the company at www.jonssonpower.com
As you can se it certainly attracted a lot of attention. GMC built 12 Futurliners in the early 1940s as part of an on-going travelling promotional roadshow in the US started called 'The Parade of Progress.' They were then rebuilt in 1953 in their current guise before the Parade of Progress was finally ended a short time afterwards ended and the streamlined trucks were then sold off.
There are some great websites and ethusiasts sites on Futurliner. Just google and you'll get them all up. Joel Dimberger's at http://www.joeld.net/futurliner/futurliner.html is pretty good.
I got talking brielfy to Nicklas Jonsson and asked him to provide Biglorryblog with updates as the truck is restored. It would be great to follow its progress through! Meanwhile, Nicklas had another of his trucks at Elmia, this immaculate little Chevrolet tractor which normally haul as a BP tanker
It was rather wet and early in the morning at Elmia but you couldn't mistake the quality of this restoration
I'll post up some more stuff from Elmia over the coming days--there was plenty to see for both old and new truck enthusiasts!
