FTA welcomes diabetic driver law change

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has welcomed changes to the law that allow drivers with insulin treated diabetes to apply for HGV licences.

Under the new rules, which came into force on 15 November, drivers who would have been prevented from obtaining a license or driving professionally will now have their applications considered by the Driver and Vehicle Licence Agency (DVLA).

Ian Gallagher, FTA policy manager, says: “This change in the law could mean some people who were previously prevented from driving are now able to regain their livelihood and their independence.

“This change will give those whose condition is under control the opportunity to work and to make a useful contribution to society.”

In July the DVLA confirmed  it would cover the cost of individual medical assessments  for diabetics wishing to get Group 2 driving entitlements, ahead of this month’s law change.
