French Ecotax postponed until 2014
The introduction of the French Ecotax has been postponed until 1 January 2014, after a trial this summer revealed problems with the technology used to calculate the fee owed.
The levy, which will apply to all trucks over 3.5-tonnes using 15,000km of France’s road network, was due to come into force on 1 October, but the French government last week said that the on-board computer system used to calculate the fee due was not functioning correctly.
Ecomouv, the company manufacturing and supplying the technology, has been asked to fix and test the system before the Ecotax is implemented next year.
The French government blamed the delay on a lack of preparation and anticipation of device difficulties under the previous government.
French transport association FNTR said that just 1% of the 800,000 total vehicles expected to register online for the technology have signed-up since registration opened in July.
