Recycling and waste management firm Powerday has added two Volvo FE electric skiploaders to its fleet. The London-based operator will use the vehicles across the city and the south east. Following a successful trial period, the skiploaders are expected to save around 30 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The units are fitted with Hyva skiploader bodywork and powered by an electric power take-off.

Edward Crossan, CEO at Powerday, said: “In line with our net-zero roadmap, adopting these electric skiploaders into our fleet shows our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to cleaner air and environment in London. By investing in electric skiploaders, we lead the charge towards cleaner, greener solutions.”

The new units were supplied by Guili Chemello, transport solutions executive at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East. The FEs feature two-speed transmissions and a traction control system is used to optimise power delivery at all times, improving handling over slippery surfaces. Drivers can select different drive modes to focus on performance, comfort and energy usage.

Ideally suited to inner-city working environments, the FE Electric has a range of around 190km and has four batteries. To support these two vehicles, Powerday installed a 150kW DC charger at its Willesden Junction site which was added during the trial period. This can recharge the skiploaders in 2.3 hours.

The FEs have full air suspension and a lower passenger door window to improve direct vision. Safety features include electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking and lane keeping alerts.

Powerday opted for a Volvo Gold contract for repair and maintenance requirements. This covers proactive battery monitoring and ensures associated components are in good working order and replaced or repaired before something can cause unplanned downtime. The skiploaders will be put to work five days a week.
