Commercialmotor.com catches up with Neil Willis, head of used trucks UK & Ireland at Renault Trucks to find out how the used truck market reacted in 2023.

How has the used truck market been in 2023?

It’s been a year of two halves, with the first half a similar marketplace to 2022 where demand outweighed supply, whereas the second half has seen more used trucks hitting the market due to new truck deliveries and lower lead times.

What have been the challenges in the used truck market this year?

The two stand out challenges:

  • Explaining to customers that the new normal for the average mileage of returning tractor units is now 500K km plus
  • The general cost of borrowing, both for new and used trucks.

Have there been any welcome/unwelcome surprises?

It always surprises me how many new customers we welcome to Renault Trucks each year, almost 1 in 3 sales is to a new used truck customer – and this has been consistent for the past 5 years.

What can we expect from the used market in 2024?

The market to remain competitive whilst volumes are high. Customers will have a lot of choice and will be looking for the best deal that suits them as an operator. And it won’t be just about the price tag. Like ourselves I expect other manufacturers to offer finance, R+M and telematics type offers within the sale price which will only strengthen the appeal of buying a used truck. In addition, we will also begin to see used EVs start to hit the used truck market, so watch this space…
