RS Transport has taken delivery of its first tractor unit which will be put to work on bulk haulage jobs. The order also included two Volvo FMX 8x4 rigid tippers with Abba and Thompson bodies. The 44-tonne plated FH 540 Globetrotter 6x2 will be paired with a STAS tipping trailer. Transport solutions executive Rory Kelly from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East supplied the vehicles to the Coleshill-based firm.
Nathan Smith, director at RS Transport, said: “Having assessed the whole market, we concluded that Volvo delivered the best overall product at the most competitive price point. They’ll certainly be right at the top of our list as we look to add more trucks to our business in the future.
“Though our fleet is predominately made up of rigids, we wanted a unit that could both carry more payload and was more suited to longer distance work. Having worked closely with Rory and his team, the FH proved the ideal solution to our needs. Our drivers are big Volvo fans. When you buy Volvo, you know you’re guaranteed to get a good quality truck and these latest units certainly live up to those expectations.”
The FH is equipped with a 540hp engine with peak torque of 2,600Nm and the tippers have 420hp engines with maximum torque of 2,100Nm. All three vehicles are fitted with I-Shift automated gearboxes to provide smooth gearshifts based on speed, weight and incline.
Specified with the fuel package, the tractor is fitted with I-See predictive cruise control and it’s expected to cover 100,000km annually. Inside, the driver benefits from a 33-litre fridge, microwave, dual armrests, leather interior and suspended driver’s seat. Safety equipment includes lane departure warning, forward collision warning with advanced emergency braking, electrically heated and operated mirrors and rain-sensing windscreen wipers.
