Driver training specialist HGVC will promote the latest government-funded Skills Bootcamps programme at Road Transport Expo from 28-30 June.

Based at stand G12, the HGVC team will offer visitors access to its expertise and knowledge on HGV and bus driver training around the UK.

HGVC will demonstrate to visitors how the Skills Bootcamps can help businesses access government funding to upskill their existing employees into qualified HGV drivers.

The company provides HGV driver training across more than 400 centres throughout the UK.

Offering both small and large-scale licence acquisition programmes, HGVC said it is the provider of choice for many companies across the country.

HGVC leads the Driver Academy Group (DAG), a consortium comprising workforce solutions group Manpower and trade body Logistics UK.

DAG was recently awarded a full extension of its contract with the Department for Education (DfE) to provide training under the government’s extended Skills Bootcamps in HGV Driving.

The scheme will train and place into work thousands more HGV drivers over the coming year.

HGVC said the DfE funding can offer a lifeline for both individual candidates and employers dealing with budget constraints given the cost-of-living crisis.

DAG has secured funding to train a further 2,160 individuals over the next 12 months. Within the new contract, DAG will deliver funded courses, offering employers a 70% contribution towards the cost of HGV driver training.

Since the launch of the Skills Bootcamps in HGV Driving in December 2021, the DAG has trained around 1,400 drivers. Some 1,070 trainees have now passed their practical test and are ready to drive.

James Clifford, CEO of HGVC, said: “We’re looking forward to attending this year’s Road Transport Expo. It’s the leading event for the industry and will be a great opportunity to meet with firms across the sector to understand what training and development issues they are focused on.

“From our perspective, we’ll be very much promoting the opportunities of the government’s latest Skills Bootcamp funding.”

He added: “While the immediate short-term driver shortage has abated, the long-term chronic shortage persists. Fully qualified drivers coming through the existing scheme are ready to go straight into roles.

“For employers re-considering training budgets, the extension is a huge opportunity to secure 70% of the funding to train up new drivers or existing staff.

“While the economy continues to face some major challenges, this scheme really is a lifeline for the UK’s logistics industry.”
