An HGV driver has been sentenced to two years in jail, suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving on the A55 in Wales. Ian Paul Owen appeared before Caernarfon Crown Court for sentencing on 13 September, where he was also disqualified from driving for two years, told to complete 200 hours of community work, and ordered to pay £420 in costs.
The incident occurred on 20 January 2022 at temporary lights on the westbound carriageway of the A55 near Britannia Bridge shortly before 3am. North Wales Police said four vehicles were involved in the collision – Owen’s Volvo, a Scania and two cars. Marc Roberts, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene and another man sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital in Bangor.
