The drivers’ hours rules have been temporarily relaxed for operators involved in the transport of live pigs from Scotland to abattoirs in England, following a fire at the Brechin abattoir in Angus.
The fortnightly driving limit will be increased from 90 hours to 130 hours from midnight on Monday 21 August to the end of the day on Sunday 17 September. The relaxation will only apply to livestock transporters holding a Long Journey Transporter authorisation (Type 2), and drivers who are moving live pigs from Scottish farms to abattoirs in England and hold a CPC specifically for pigs.
The DfT said drivers should not be expected to drive whilst tired and operators will remain responsible for the health and safety of their drivers and other road users.
All other requirements of the drivers’ hours rules will remain in force.
Drivers making use of the relaxation must note the reason for exceeding their hours on the back of their tachograph chart or print-out.
The DfT said the temporary relaxation will remain under review and can be withdrawn at any time.
