DVSA launches mobile unit to catch dangerous operators

A portable vehicle check site, which includes a roller brake tester, under-vehicle inspection cameras and tacho analysis equipment is the DVSA’s latest tool to take dangerous drivers and vehicles off the roads. The agency said its Mobile Inspection Unit (MIU) rivals the DVSA’s most capable of enforcement sites and also includes shaker pads, weight pads and vehicle calibration tools. The MIU can be deployed in a matter of minutes and allows the DVSA to be less predictable in its ambition to tackle dangerous operators.

The DVSA said it had intelligence that some non-compliant operators deliberately change their routes to avoid known DVSA sites. The MIU is transported using a standard container trailer. The enforcement agency has contracted the haulage out to an earned recognition operator and as the unit is self-loading and self-unloading it requires no additional special equipment to use.

Marian Kitson, DVSA director of enforcement, said: “The mobile inspection unit provides us with a new opportunity to be even more agile and focused on our targeting of dangerous drivers and vehicles.”

The kit will be trialled at check sites across the country over the next few months.
