The FTA has published guidance on safe coupling, uncoupling and parking of commercial vehicles and trailers.

The guide was written for hauliers who control sites where coupling and uncoupling is undertaken by HGV users, managers, self-employed drivers and driver training bodies.

It was developed by the industry, alongside the HSE, as a good practice guide to reduce the likelihood of a runaway or rollaway incident. Research by the Health and Safety Laboratory suggested many drivers do not understand how truck and trailer parking brakes operate.

The guide includes practical information on how parking brake systems operate.
