Police in North Yorkshire arrested an ADR driver on suspicion of drug driving last month after he tested positive for cannabis on a drug wipe.

The arrest was part of wider operation targeting commercial vehicles on the A1 and ensuring they were as safe as they could be.

The day-long exercise at Newton Park Services involved partnering with Durham police and led to 21 HGVs being stopped and subjected to a full inspection.

The police said where appropriate, drivers were given words of advice, but it also prosecuted some for various road related offences, which included vehicles being overweight and also the incorrect use of a tachograph.

Officers also highlighted its arrest of the dangerous goods vehicle driver and added that he was later released under investigation.

Traffic Constable David Minto from North Yorkshire police’s roads policing group said the results showed “how critical these operations are in reducing the risk on the regions roads relating to both drivers and vehicles.”

He added: “Engagement and education is a key part of what we do, but when appropriate we will never flinch with enforcement if it is required to keep our roads and motorists safe.

“Together, with other police forces and our partners we will continue to be relentless in our approach to make our roads safer for everyone to use.”
