A deputy traffic commissioner said she had to revoke the licence of a scaffolding firm, resulting in 10 redundancies, because she had serious road safety concerns about its operation.
C Evans Scaffolding appeared before deputy TC Laura Thomas after a DVSA desk based assessment of the business was marked unsatisfactory.
Some of the problems found included inspection and maintenance issues; incomplete records; no evidence provided of any system to record training and multiple occasions of driving without a card being used.
The operator also provided incomplete documentation in relation to financial standing, so the DTC concluded finance for running five lorries also fell short.
At a Cambridge public inquiry, sole director Christopher Evans said he was “just a scaffolder” and was “learning on the job” when it came to transport.
Thomas said there had been no improvements in respect of drivers’ hours record keeping and issues highlighted in the original assessment were still present in the documents provided at the hearing.
The DTC said the case fell into the serious bracket and added: “Even taking account of the impact, I regret to conclude that the failings are so severe, wide ranging and numerous that this operator deserves to be put out of business.
“I have serious road safety concerns and it is unfair to compliant operators to allow this operation to continue.”
