The Metropolitan police has appealed for witnesses to a fatal road traffic collision involving an HGV that left a PhD student cyclist dead.

The incident occurred in the capital’s Clerkenwell Road, near the junction with Farringdon Road shortly before 8.20pm on Tuesday 19 March.

The police said Cheistha Kochhar, 33, tragically died following the collision with the refuse lorry and that anyone who witnessed the incident, or road users with dashcam footage which captured the events, are asked to contact them on 101 or 020 8246 9820 and quote CAD6903/19Mar.

The Met said that the lorry driver stopped at the scene and was helping them with their enquiries.

The force added that there had been no arrest and enquiries into the circumstances continued.

In a statement, Kochhar’s family said she had come to London as a PhD student at the London School of Economics after having graduating from Delhi University with a BA in economics and mathematics in 2008 and a post graduate course in international development and policy from the University of Chicago.

“She had also started a couple of startups, first as an undergraduate to distribute excess food from college canteens to the needy and later to create opportunities for the unemployed underprivileged section of the New Delhi society,” the family said.

“The magnitude of this loss is incomprehensible.”
