Birmingham-based Onpoint Logistics has added a new Volvo FH Aero 6x2 tractor unit to its fleet of circa 100 vehicles. Provided the new truck achieves expected fuel figures, Onpoint Logistics plans to add another 20 FH Aeros to its operation. The new truck will be run on HVO to help the company cut its emissions.
Anthony Delaney, sales and marketing director at Onpoint Logistics, said: “We’ve got plenty of older Volvo FHs on the fleet and we wanted to see what benefits, in terms of fuel figures, the Aero can bring in comparison to those.
“Initially, it will be running a trunk from Birmingham to Wales, with a double deck trailer on the back, so it’s on quite a testing, fuel-guzzling application. It’s still bedding in, and we are yet to have the driver training so there’s plenty more to come, but we’re already seeing an improvement of 0.5-0.7mpg from the truck it replaced on that run – which is really encouraging. We expect to move forward with the subsequent order of 20 Aeros, which will arrive over the course of the next 18 months.”
Supplied by Daniel Byworth, area sales manager at Harthorne Group, Onpoint Logistics opted for a Volvo gold repair and maintenance to take care of the vehicle over 130,000km annually. The truck will be topped up with HVO at the company’s Birmingham depot where it has a 40,000-litre HVO tank.
Alongside the standard FH Aero features such as the camera monitoring system in place of traditional mirrors, the new truck has twin fuel tanks, Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels, a fridge and microwave. A 460hp turbo compound engine is paired with Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox and I-See predictive cruise control.
Delaney said: “The early impressions are really good. The driver is still learning to get the very best out of it, but his feedback so far has been hugely positive.”
Volvo will be exhibiting at Road Transport Expo 2025, which takes place at NAEC Stoneleigh between 24-26 June. It’s free to attend and registrations are now open.
