The BEST Trucks DAF Electric Truck Centre in Barendrecht, the Netherlands has a new on-site power system installed by PACCAR Part Europe. The microgrid, attached to the site’s existing 750 solar panels, includes an Energy Storage System (ESS) with a capacity of 480 kWh and an Energy Management System (EMS). The project also saw three super-fast chargers with a maximum output of 360kW installed. One charger is available for public use and the other two were fitted in the workshop so electric trucks can be charged within an hour.

BEST Trucks’ owner Ronald Janssen, said: “Electric vehicles should always leave our workshop charged to at least 80% of their capacity, so that they can immediately hit the road after they have been serviced.”

The EMS brings together data points including expected sunlight, energy usage and peak grid demands to alter the system to maximise efficiency and take advantage of the lowest energy rates.

Janssen added: “Due to the increasing demand for energy, securing the energy supply is under pressure. You don’t want to choose between keeping the lights on in the workshop or supercharging your customers’ electric vehicles. This microgrid ensures a consistent and sustainable energy supply while also facilitating rapid charging. It remains operational even in unfavourable weather conditions or during periods of insufficient grid electricity. It is good to know we can always rely on the energy storage.”

Since the system is connected to the grid, the company can now sell solar energy back into the grid or store energy on site in preparation for periods of poor supply from the grid.

PACCAR Parts Europe manager innovation and strategic programs, Rob van Erp, said: “More dealers are showing an interest in this on-site power supply system. It is all about offering customers a premium service and facilitating the energy transition for a greener future.”
