Energy costs top the list of challenges facing operators in 2023, according to the latest Motor Transport and Commercial Motor reader research, with 92% of respondents citing this as their biggest worry.

This was closely followed by 81% stating the fear of a recession was also a concern, alongside the continuing challenge of sourcing new HGV drivers (74%).

Operator trading position confidence has also dropped from the same time last year, according to our research, perhaps reflecting the current volatile economic climate facing businesses.

Despite the challenges, more than two-thirds of operators are still planning to invest in fleet vehicles next year: 34% in new trucks, 15% in used and the remainder a mixture of both.

The latest ‘Hot Topic: Sector Insight’ report explores operator confidence levels, investment plans and respondent views on a wide range of topical industry issues.

It is one of many topical reports available to download free of charge, so why not take a look at the full range today.
