MAN sales up 37% in 2023

In 2023, MAN Truck and Bus saw a considerable increase in sales across its truck, bus, van and engine products. Total vehicle sales were up by 37 percent compared to 2022 and 11,600 engines were sold, more than half of which went to agricultural applications for use in tractors and combine harvesters. However, the result should be looked at in the context of several significant setbacks for the company's supply chain. A factory supplying MAN with electrical components was damaged during the Russian invasion of Ukraine and restoring component supplies took considerable time, impacting the availability of vehicles and harming sales.

Friedrich Baumann, chief sales and customer solutions officer at MAN Truck & Bus SE, said: "After some very challenging years, we are back on the road to success. We were able to score points with our innovative product portfolio and our customer-oriented services, which is one of the reasons why the 2023 financial year brought us record sales in some cases. Thanks to a strong team performance across all areas of the company, we were able to meet the extremely high demand in the best possible way and deliver more vehicles and engines than we have for years."

Truck sales accounted for 83,700 of the 116,000 vehicles sold last year, a 44 percent increase over the previous year. Elsewhere, bus sales rose by 19 percent to total around 5,700 units and coach sales have bounced back to over 1100 vehicles sold. Vans were a particularly successful product line for the company with 2023 sales exceeding pre-pandemic levels at 26,000 units, up 23 percent. 

Last year also saw an uptick in electric vehicle sales with e-buses up from 293 in 2022 to 771 in 2023. MAN’s eTruck was launched in October to offer customers a way to decarbonise their haulage fleets and by 2030 the company aims to offer half of all new trucks with an electric drivetrain and 90 percent of new city buses will also be electric.
