In 1964 the Renault Trucks commercial vehicle assembly plant in Bourg-en-Bresse opened. Sixty years later, the facility is still operational and has moved into the next generation of vehicle production with its first electric truck rolling off the production line at the end of 2023. Celebrating the anniversary, the factory will be open to the public until the end of the year.

Since its opening by Paul Berliet six decades ago, the Bourg-en-Bresse facility has focused on the production of long haul vehicles and trucks used in construction applications. In 2001, it was brought into the Volvo Group and now has nearly 2000 employees. The factory is said to be the largest private employer in the region.

During its operation, the site has produced nearly a million trucks. Most notably, the factory was responsible for building 130,000 Renault Magnum trucks between 1990 and 2013. From 2013, manufacturing has focused on Renault Trucks T models for long haul applications, C models for construction and K models for heavy construction work.

As well as producing new vehicles, there’s a used truck factory on site. The workshop is dedicated to converting used vehicles for a second life. Typical conversions could include long haul tractor units being converted to rigids or approach trucks.

Towards the end of last year, Renault E-Tech T and E-Tech C trucks joined the manufacturing line. These are Renault’s latest electric trucks that support operators in meeting their sustainability goals for long haul and construction applications.

In collaboration with the Bourg-en-Bresse tourist office, Renault will be offering guided tours to the public. The tours include a look round the 120-hectare site to learn more about the history and development of the facility over the past 60 years. Those interested in a tour are advised to make a reservation with the Bourg-en-Bresse tourist office and tours will be conducted on Mondays and Fridays until the end of the year.
