SMUK criticises TfL AI camera approval

Commercial vehicle safety company SMUK has criticised TfL for allowing what it calls ‘subpar’ AI cameras to pass DVS requirements.

The company has taken issue with TfL’s self-certification process for the Blind Spot Information System (BSIS) and Moving Off Information System (MOIS). These systems will be required for trucks to meet the upcoming DVS changes from October this year.

SMUK’s chairman Steve MacDonald (pictured) said: “I am utterly gobsmacked that some of the subpar AI cameras made it through as an option for a blind spot. It is not fit for purpose, and we at SMUK will not fit them.”

The company alleges the self-certification process has caused misunderstandings and misinformation around the new safety requirements and standards for camera systems. SMUK cites independent testing by Loughborough University that identified an AI camera that failed to meet new requirements. The system was found to perform below expected levels during adverse weather conditions and low light.

Camera systems should be functional in all conditions and any time of day to support drivers in identifying vulnerable road users close to the vehicle. Based on this study, SMUK is imploring TfL to revoke permits granted with self-certified AI cameras.

The company argues it’s vital to ensure the correct use of tested AI cameras when operators are fitting equipment to meet the new Progressive Safe System (PSS) standards. Failure to do so can endanger lives.

SMUK fits Radar Predict from Brigade Electronics. Through a programme of extensive testing SMUK has determined this system is suitable for all road and weather conditions. AI is used to interpret vehicle speed, direction, and that of nearby cyclists. The driver is then alerted to any potential collisions.

Brigade Electronics’ senior product manager, Thierry Bourgeay, said: “Radar Predict addresses blind spot issues and reduces false alerts, automatically activating during turns without requiring indicator selection.”
