Our Tachographs and Telematics research report in road transport highlights the rate at which smart tachos are being adopted and gives insight into operator attitudes to the technology.

In recent years, we have seen the introduction of electronic tachos, while smart tachos have been mandatory since June 2019. Smart tachos offer opportunities to make better operational use of the data collected, while the appearance of Covid-19 last year has highlighted their value in collecting data in a safe, socially-distanced way.

So making the most of the latest technologies would appear to be common sense – but are all operators doing so? In this report we plot the progress operators have made in adopting the technology. There are some surprising results: for example, there are still a few fleets that continue to use analogue tachos. The research also looks at what use operators are making of the data, how much data is being analysed and what action is taking based on the findings.

The survey also plots the progress of telematics in road transport operations. Our first report into Tachographs & Telematics, conducted in the autumn of 2019, showed an increasing number of operators adopting the technology, and this year’s study highlights the degree to which that progress has continued.

This supplement has been produced in conjunction with AssetGo, Descartes, Stoneridge, TDi Software, and TruTac.

We hope you find this study useful in giving an insight into how these systems are currently perceived and used in the transport industry as well as providing some pointers to the future.
