RL Proudlock & Sons has taken delivery of a 65-tonne GCW Volvo FH 540 Globetrotter 6x2 tractor unit. The new truck replaces an older FH model with a similar specification, and has been put to work on livestock jobs, as well as general haulage and abnormal loads. The Kirkheaton-based family-run business operates a seven-strong all-Swedish fleet.
The Volvo-dominated fleet consists of four tractor units and three rigids. The new FH is expected to remain in service for at least three years, with an anticipated annual mileage of 120,000km. The truck has a 540hp engine with maximum torque of 2,600Nm and is fitted with full air-suspension and the Visibility+ package, which adds LED headlights, static cornering lights and electrically heated and operated rear-view mirrors.
Director Daniel Proudlock, says: “Delivering heavy plant equipment can be particularly challenging when you consider the tight country roads and farmland we have to tackle, so having the ability to easily adjust the truck’s ride height is really valuable. We take a lot of pride in our fleet, so anything we can do to avoid those minor bumps and scrapes that come with our line of work is welcomed.”
The 6x2 rear-lift configuration also provides better manoeuvrability and traction. Inside, it’s kitted out with leather upholstery, a heated and ventilated driver’s seat, microwave, fridge/freezer and twin bunks. The latest addition to the fleet is being driven by Proudlock, and he’s already preparing the next generation to join the family business, with son Jamie’s name on the front.
Unlike the 15-plate vehicle this FH replaces, which was fitted with a manual gearbox, the new truck has a 12-speed I-Shift transmission. This evaluates speed, weight, gradient and torque demand to determine the right gear for the situation.
Commenting on the air-suspension, Proudlock says: “The ride is far superior compared with Volvo’s nearest rivals – it’s like driving a high-end car.”
