Favourite holiday destination and why?
Portugal has a lot to offer but anywhere with good food, good wine and golf.
What car do you drive?
A white one, I think it’s an Audi A3, I’m not that into cars.
Hobbies?
Primarily, I’m a taxi service for my two kids. I am a licensed FA coach and run my son’s U11 football team.
How did you get into the industry and why?
Despite my youthful appearance, when I left school at 16 in 1986 I joined Renault Dodge in Dunstable and did a full five-year commercial apprenticeship. They were setting up a used truck department as they had something called “buy backs” due in and I was offered a permanent position as the junior salesman/administrator.
How would you encourage more young people into the industry?
I think the issue is one of awareness. Renault was a major employer in my home town, so school-leavers became aware of the opportunities almost by default. That’s where initiatives like Think Logistics can provide such a pivotal role. With the help of some top operators, and with Daf Trucks providing financial support, Think Logistics is getting out there to make youngsters aware of the huge range of careers that exist in the transport industry
What will be the outlook for the used truck market in 2015?
The market is stable; good, late, clean kit remains scarce but is doing well. Older tractor units are not so sort after as exchange rates, war, terrorism and Ebola have slowed the export markets required to keep the supply and demand on an even keel. Rigid vehicles remain strong and, with body builder lead times nearer a year in some cases, I can’t imagine much will change during the remainder of 2015. Also for the first time people are looking to acquire used examples of Euro-6 product.
