A lorry driver who caused life-changing injuries to a motorist when he crashed into them while driving on the wrong side of the road has been jailed. German national Vytavtas Morkynas admitted he got confused about which side of the road to drive on as soon as the police arrived at the scene of the collision on the A1060 at Boynton Cross on 5 July this year. His vehicle collided with a Kia Soul, causing its driver to be knocked unconscious and trapped inside the car, requiring the fire service to cut them out. The motorist was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition having sustained two broken kneecaps and legs, a fractured wrist, injuries to their pelvis, internal injuries, and a serious head injury.
Essex police said 44-year-old Morkynas told officers: “It’s my fault, I was on the wrong side of the road. I’m used to driving in Europe.” He was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was later charged. He admitted the offence at Chelmsford Crown Court and was jailed for 10 months and banned from driving for two years and nine months.
