Sustainable electric traction motor manufacturer, Advanced Electric Machines (AEM), will be highlighting its retrofit kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) at the Road Transport Expo.

The HDSRM300 technology unifies electric motors, ultracapacitors and heavy-duty power electronics to create a bolt-in, retrofit system that can turn an existing vehicle into a hybrid.

Energy recovered during braking can be used to assist the engine when it’s accelerating, which AEM said can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by up to 28% and overall emissions, including NOx, particulates and brake particulate matter, by up to 80%.

AEM’s KERS technology can be fitted to most rigid lorries from 12 tonnes upwards as well as tractor and semi-trailers up to 44 tonnes. Compatible with most vehicle brands and models, the kit doesn’t require permanent chassis modifications.

The company's electric motors use no rare-earth materials to make the system more sustainable and easier to recycle.

For drivers, the additional power supplied by the ultracapacitors under acceleration generates more torque. This means that a heavily loaded vehicle can gain speed more quickly and provides greater control behind the wheel.

Richard Lidstone-Scott, business development consultant at Advanced Electric Machines, said: “Efficiency is fundamental to the success for businesses in the transport and logistics industries.

"The KERS kit is a fast, flexible and fuel-agnostic means of achieving truck hybridisation, reducing fuel consumption and emissions, while pushing businesses to achieve the lowest overall driving costs.

"There’s no need for new charging infrastructure, the system can last for more than a decade in service, and it can be removed and refitted to other vehicles. With the system paying for itself within three years, it’s a no-brainer for businesses looking to maximise their margins by reducing fleet costs.”

AEM will be based on stand Y21a, near the Ride and Drive area.

Road Transport Expo takes place from 4-6 June at NAEC Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. It is completely free to attend for visitors, so why not book your place today?!
