The company behind Kingsmill and Allinson’s, Allied Bakeries, has replaced 68 of its vehicles with new DAF trucks. The order includes 36 DAF XB 230 18-tonners and 32 DAF XD 450 6x2 tractors. Alongside the new additions, Allied Bakeries will trial a 19-tonne DAF LF Electric at its London bakery. The rest of the DAFs will be spread across seven bakeries and four depots around the UK, contributing to the delivery of more than 8 million baked goods on a weekly basis.

From 2025, Allied Bakeries will also be using a new fleet management system. Drivers will be given upgraded handheld personal digital assistant devices and the updated system is expected to improve efficiency.

Richard Hodgson, director of logistics and planning at Allied Bakeries said: “It's been a few years since we've purchased a new fleet and it's fair to say that the feedback that we've had already from drivers is fantastic. We're particularly excited about some of the new features that the new kit will bring into our business and specifically around driver performance monitoring, pedestrian safety, additional features for driver safety, and also fuel efficiency.

“We've had a partnership with DAF now for decades and that partnership has been formed off some fantastic relationships, not just with the manufacturer, but through our local dealer, right the way through to our parts supplier. We garage all our own vehicles, servicing them and more, so all aspects that DAF offer is essential to us in terms of our appreciation for them as a supplier.”

As well as working on deliveries for its own products, the DAF trucks will be used as part of Allied Bakeries’ growing third-party good delivery services. The company has been expanding this arm of its logistics division to support retail partners in broadening their bakery ranges.
