Labour MP Ann Cryer has agreed to table an Early Day Motion on the issue of the VOSA closures as soon as Parliament returns from recess in October.
The EDM states that the DfT's policy of privatising 85% of annual tests by 2012 could adversely affect road safety, the environment and the viability of small businesses and calls upon VOSA to suspend the closure of its testing stations until viable alternative arrangements are in place for all UK operators.
Cryer has also written to the 86 MPs who have a VOSA station located in their constituency to make them aware of the issue and gain their support.
"I believe many other MPs will echo my concerns as more become aware of the potential problems caused by a reduction in the availability of public sector goods vehicle testing facilities and the apparent lack of private alternatives," says the MP for Keighley, West Yorkshire.
"By reducing the number of publicly owned goods vehicle testing facilities I believe that an increase in the number of unsafe vehicles could occur."
Cryer is also going to apply to the House of Commons speaker for an adjournment debate.
