Two apprentices from the Renault Trucks dealer network have reached the semi-finals of the WorldSkills UK heavy vehicle technology competition.

Joe Durkan of JDS Trucks & Vans (Leeds) and Ben Rogers from Sparks Commercial Services Swindon (pictured) took part in the initial rounds, beating more than 100 competitors from apprenticeship programmes across the UK, to secure their place in the last 18.

They will go on to compete in the semi-finals in Loughborough in July. The initial rounds tested their theory-related HGV knowledge and the semi-finals will examine their practical knowledge, with six tasks including engine diagnosis, transmission systems, body, electrical, braking systems and inspection.

The top six will progress to the UK final at the NEC in Birmingham in November.
