Longtown, Cumbria-based haulier WM Armstrong has won a contract to operate an £800,000 fleet of tankers on behalf of a Dutch dairy company which is opening a cheese factory in the county. The decision to base the £70m dairy processing plant at Kingsmoor Park near Carlisle was revealed at a meeting last week between West Lakes Dairy Park (WLDP) and more than 200 farmers.
Working in partnership with WLDP, Armstrongs has invested in four six-wheel Scania rigids and 22,000-litre trailers which will be hauled by Hino 700 Series tractor units. The vehicles will transport milk from Cumbrian farmers to the factory about 20 drivers will be recruited.
Armstrong MD Jennifer Whyberd says: "I am delighted to be working with West Lakes Dairy Park and local farmers on this exciting new project for Cumbria. To start with we will be collecting half a million litres of milk a day from 140 farms however, I am sure this will grow as West Lakes establishes a dairy site in Cumbria."
WLDP chief executive Kate Willard says company is keen to use local suppliers and distributors to provide a boost to the Cumbrian economy - and she is delighted to have WM Armstrong on the team: "There was no question of going anywhere else. Armstrongs is widely popular with farmers and is the best in Cumbria."
WLDP will start cutting and packing cheese next spring the new plant is due to open in September 2008.
