Asda is to take delivery of 165 Scania R400 LA6x2/4MNA twin-steer tractor units, adding to the 1,400 Scanias it already operates.
The deal, which sees the trucks go into service on a four-year contract hire deal, also sees Scania become responsible for the maintenance of a further 200 trailers on the Asda fleet.
Gary Banister, Asda national transport manager, central operations, says: "Although Asda and Scania have operated in partnership for many years, we still conducted a comprehensive procurement exercise before the decision to re-equip with Scania was taken."
Banister says a proven product performance, the Scania network's ability to provide maintenance for Asda's trucks and trailers nationwide, and a "highly-competitive pricing policy" were the key factors in adding the R400s to the fleet.
The trucks were supplied by Keltruck, TruckEast and Haydock Commercial Vehicles.
