Ban on HGVs overtaking on M11 to go ahead

A ban on HGVs overtaking on the M11 is to go ahead once funding and statutory issues are overcome, according to Highways England.

The overtaking restriction on uphill sections of the motorway was originally announced by Highways England’s former incarnation, the Highways Agency, in February 2015.

At the time, the Highways Agency asset development manager Andy Jobling said that following a successful trial, the ban would be introduced “in the next financial year”.

A Highways England spokeswoman told CM: “We are committed to getting the best use out of the road network, making journeys more reliable and improving safety. Our research has shown us that implementing lorry overtaking restrictions on uphill sections of the M11 between junctions 8 and 9 would be beneficial to road users, reducing congestion and improving journey times. We plan to introduce this change subject to funding and statutory processes, and will announce more in due course.”
