DIY retailer B&Q is investing £5.4m on a new fleet of double-deck trailers that it claims will cut its annual transport CO2 emissions by almost three million tonnes.
Since completing its initial order of 60 double-deckers in June, B&Q has ordered a further 50 Montracon and Don-Bur trailers for delivery before the end of the year, plus a second batch of 70 to arrive in time for the retailer's busy Easter period.
Rick Jones, director of logistics at B&Q, says: "Our fleet comprises 225 tractor units and 700 trailers and when all the 120 new trailers are in service, we'll be looking to save a combined 54,000 miles a week, or 2.8 million miles per year.
"With this reduction in road miles we can reduce our fleet CO2 emissions by 2.7 million tonnes per annum."
Jones adds: "We favour proven technology and the double-deckers are proven to reduce cost, road miles and emissions. "
The company has also joined the 10:10 campaign, which encourages businesses and organisations to reduce their CO2 emissions by 10% by the end of 2010.
