Brett's turns to contract hire

Cambridgeshire-based Brett's Transport has taken delivery of ten new Euro 3 Volvo FHs to service a new medium-term contract with a packaging company.  Managing director Simon Brett explains that the trucks have been taken on contract hire deals, which is the first time that the company has opted for off-balance sheet finance for truck acquisitions in its 70-year history. He tells MT that the primary reason for this change in policy is improved flexibility - as it allows the trucks to remain on the fleet for exactly the same length of time as the new contract. Another factor to influence its decision is a workshop that is already running at maximum capacity.

The trucks, which were delivered between July and September, are all fitted with Dynafleet. Brett says this enables the company to track the vehicles and monitor fuel usage. He says Dynafleet's fuel calculation can be 0.25mpg out in either direction, but overall the readings are accurate. These are the first trucks on the 60-strong fleet to have digital tachographs. "We are learning how to use them as we go along," says Brett, who thinks digitachs will prove beneficial in the long run. "However at the moment not all the drivers have smart cards, so we are being held to ransom over who can drive them," he says.
