Collins Earthworks has equipped its four new Volvo FMX electric trucks with Brigade Electronics camera systems.

The company’s 11 newest trucks have been fitted with the same five-camera safety solution. After experiencing collisions where other road users have driven into the side of its vehicles Collins looked for a solution to capture any incidents like this, making it easier for insurance purposes. Cameras are fitted around the vehicle on both sides, the front and back of the cab and the back of the trailer.

Workshop transport manager, Richard Williams, said: “This is a big step for us. Previously we used reversing cameras but this five-camera system from Brigade is much better for our needs. Using a SIM card the system records and live streams the footage of all vehicle movements onto a dashboard which can be monitored at Collins’ Earthworks HQ.”

Collins plans to introduce this technology on all its new vehicles going forward. The earthmoving and civil projects contractor operates a fleet of 130 vehicles and is transitioning to greener operations by electrifying some of its trucks.

Williams said: “We embrace new technology and in particular anything which helps improve safety in our operations. This isn’t always practical when you consider our vehicles might be 130 miles away at another location. With live streaming we can look at the event, while the vehicle is still fully operational elsewhere, without calling it back here and creating unnecessary downtime.

“The five-camera system is supported by Brigade’s SideScan system and left-turn indication on our vehicles to further enhance safety, particularly with the push on pedestrian and cycle safety. Our aim is to integrate all the information from these systems onto one dashboard and one system and Brigade is supporting us as we make this transition. An added advantage is the technical support offered by Brigade in the event of problems.”

Brigade will be exhibiting at Road Transport Expo, which takes place at NAEC Stoneleigh between 4-6 June. Registrations are now open, so book your free place now!
