C Butt on right track

Northampton-based C Butt says it is on the right track to reach its own "platinum" performance standard after experiencing a healthy rise in turnover and profit last year. The distribution and logistics company says a review of group activities, after turnover nosedived by £1.7m the year before, as well as successful business development planning and cost-control measures, led to a 10.5% increase in turnover to £30.8m for the year ending 30 April 2007.

Pre-tax profit also rose to £366,000. Growth is also attributed to the national and regional distribution centres it opened over the past 12 months in Northampton, Lutterworth and Manchester. The Lutterworth site is a 200,000ft2 depot that resulted from a five-year contract win with kitchen appliance and houseware producer Kenwood and Delonghi. The other two sites are around 20,000ft2.

At Trafford Park, a three-year, home-delivery network contract with manufacturers Kitchens Direct, Moben Kitchens and Dolphin Bathrooms will be facilitated. All the warehousing space is being rented. Contract renewals have also taken place with Smurfit Kappa Group, Cereform Baking and Sealed Air in Kettering.

Group operations director Karl Hodgkinson says the company is now looking for facilities in north-east London and the South West. These will also be around 20,000ft2, and have parking bays for 20 vehicles. The company describes itself as being currently at a "gold standard", but Hodgkinson adds: "We still have a long way to go before performance standards reach 'platinum', ensuring sustainable growth, but we are certainly on the right tracks."
