The Department for Transport (DfT) has given the green light to a £15m scheme to improve traffic flows around Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.
The planned improvements include the widening of the M5 junction 21 southbound slip road to reduce queuing off the motorway. The A370 approaches in Weston-super-Mare will also be widened and the A370 Marchfields Way will be turned into a dual-carriageway to allow two-way traffic between the Winterstoke and Drove Road roundabouts. An additional lane will also be added to the Marchfields Way roundabout.
The works, part of the Weston Package which was allocated £10.4m of DfT funding last year, has recieved final approval and a contractor is now being appointed to begin the works. An additional £4m in funding has been pledged by North Somerset Council.
Councillor at North Somerset Council responsible for highways and transport, Elfan Ap Rees, said: “Behind the scenes highways officers have been working really hard on the detailed planning of this package and I am very grateful for the long hours put in over recent months to ensure the scheme fully meets the DfT criteria and local expectations. I am looking forward to seeing the first spade going into the ground as soon as possible.”
