Essex-based logistics company C&H (Hauliers) has modernised and expanded its fleet with 54 new trucks and trailers to cater for a recently-won five-year contract.

Director Steve Mercer says because of the new contract, with an undisclosed company, 25 new vehicles were needed, taking the fleet to 87 trucks.

C&H (Hauliers) also inherited older trailers from the previous contractor, some of which Mercer will refurbish, with the others being replaced.

The new vehicles include: 33 Mercedes-Benz Actros 2544 trucks with Long Distance cabs; 20 Lawrence David and SDC curtainsided trailers; and a uniquely liveried Actros with a MegaSpace cab to celebrate the company's 50th year.

"Mercedes-Benz trucks are competitively priced, reliable, fuel-efficient and popular with our drivers," says Mercer. "But of no less importance to me is the service I get from David Jones and his team at [the Mercedes-dealer] Sparshatts."

The repair and maintenance is carried out onsite in C&H's workshop at Tilbury by the dealership, with the trailers maintained in-house by the haulier.

Mercer is full of praise for the dealership's response to some challenging issues over the past year. "For example, to help keep our fuel costs down, the dealer recently introduced a dedicated mobile service van - its technicians now come to our Thamesport and Suffolk depots to maintain our trucks and prepare them for MoT tests," he says.

C&H (Hauliers) is part of the Charles Gee Group and does domestic and European general haulage, containers and forestry products.
