Adam Baker, a mechanic at the Chassis Cab dealership in Ipswich, has won the Daf 2016 European Technician of the Year.

During the final, in Eindhoven, the 16 contestants demonstrated their skills in theoretical and practical situations, solving complex malfunctions on engine and vehicle systems. Johan Drenth, aftersales director of Daf Trucks NV (Netherlands), said: “Daf organizes the European Technician of the Year competition to underline the importance of professional workshop technicians. It’s about delivering service and quality.”

In the first year of the competition, entrants compete for their country’s national title. The winners then compete against each other in the European final. Baker, 31, who has worked at the Ipswich dealership for six years, said a good technician needs to have “an in-depth, all-round product knowledge, and above all, a lot of dedication.”

Meanwhile, Southampton-based Daf truck dealership Adams Morey has purchased the latest diagnostics software after securing a £150,000 hire purchase facility from Lloyds. The Paccar Davie 4 software allows technicians to carry out full diagnostics on the engine, transmission and electronics of Euro-6 vehicles. Adams Morey MD Mike Fennell said: “As a business we’re committed to investing in modern technology to support our customer base and give the right tools to our staff to maintain the upkeep of trucks that come into our workshops.”
