Exeter-based Parsons Nationwide Distribution has added a Mercedes-Benz Actros 26-tonner to its 53-strong mixed marque truck fleet, following a positive experience with three new generation Actros tractors it is already running.

Supplied by City West Commercials, the 2540 L has a 2.3m-wide StreamSpace cab, and is powered by a 10.7-litre engine rated at 394hp. Its reinforced curtainsider body has been built by TWR Commercial Bodybuilders of Cullompton.

Commenting on its Actros tractors, which greatly influenced the decision to purchase its first Mercedes rigid, transport manager Paul Collin said: “The Actros blows its competitors out of the water when it comes to safety and driver comfort, while it’s also ahead on fuel economy. After a year on the road the mpg figures are always in the 10s and sometimes the 11s, whereas our Swedish tractors are in the 8s. This explains why we’re only buying Mercedes-Benz trucks right now.”

The newcomer was specified with MirrorCam, which Collin said has been well received by the artic drivers.

“Our drivers have really taken to MirrorCam, to the extent that we’d now struggle to persuade those who’ve tried it to drive anything other than a Mercedes-Benz,” claimed Collin. “They particularly like the way the cameras follow the back of the trailer, which make it so much easier to see what’s going on when they’re reversing.”

He added: “The [Multimedia Cockpit] dashboard is another big success. Even the older guys have taken to the new screens, which are easy to use and look great.”

The haulier, a Pallet Track network member, will also take delivery of a City West Commercials-supplied 12-tonne Atego next month.
