American engine-manufacturer Cummins has built a fully-electric power train for HGVs, which will hit the shelves in 2019.
The 140kWh battery pack has a range of 100 miles.
A demonstrator vehicle fitted with the pack, displayed at an event in Columbus, Indiana, is capable of pulling a 16-tonne trailer.
Cummins said the power train was aimed in particular at smaller, urban HGVs.
Production for fleet and bus operators will begin in 2019, with an extended range version scheduled for availability in 2020.
This will have a diesel generator on-board, which will boost the range from 100 to 300 miles, cutting diesel costs by 50% those of a normal IC diesel engine.
The battery can be recharged in an hour at a 140kWh charging point, but Cummins intends to reduce this to 20 minutes by 2020.
The engine and demonstrator vehicle were launched weeks away from the expected reveal from electric giant Tesla of its own electric truck.
