As of January 2024, DAF’s New Generation XB, XD, XF, XG and XG+ trucks will be fitted with a suite of new advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as standard.

Advanced emergency braking systems (AEBS) will use radar and a camera to warn the driver of vulnerable road users ahead of the vehicle. Radar technology will also be employed for the drive off assist function to detect vulnerable road users when the truck is moving at low speeds.

When the AEBS warning is activated the event data recorder can log images and data around the event. It can also record data if the DAF side and turn assist warns the driver of other road users in the vehicle’s blind spots, covering all the way to the rear of the trailer.

The New Generation series will come with speed limit recognition and alerts if the limit is exceeded. Lane departure warning is also included as standard to ensure lane changes are always intended manoeuvres.

For full visibility over the rear of the truck, the outlook from a rear view camera is shown on an in-cab display. High beam assist will be an optional feature to automatically dip high beams when there’s a vehicle coming or ahead. Continuing from the existing DAF line-up, emergency stop signals alert other road users with hazard lights if the truck decelerates strongly.

Inside, a drowsiness detection system can identify if a driver needs a break and alerts them to stop. The vehicles will also be prepared for an alcohol interlock which requires a negative alcohol test before the engine will start.

Patrick Dean, member of the DAF board of management and chief engineer said: “DAF is leading the way in both passive and active safety systems. Unmatched direct and indirect view, superior cab strength and class-leading ergonomics are now combined with a full suite of new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to further strengthen our leading position in the field of safety. This is not only of the highest importance to the owner and driver of our series of New Generation DAF models – but also benefits the safety of all other road users. With the new technologies that will become standard as of January, we are setting a new industry benchmark in terms of safety for sure.”
