Market-leading truck manufacturer DAF is building a fully-electric CF tractor unit aimed at hauliers that need to deliver into urban areas.
It will be partnering on the project with Dutch technology firm VDL Groep, which is well-known across Europe for its work on electric buses.
The zero-emission, low-noise 4x2 tractor unit has been developed for up to 40-tonne distribution operations within urban areas in which single or double-axle semi-trailers are typically used.
It features a 100km (62 miles) range on one charge, with fast charging of batteries achieved in 30 minutes, or a full charge in around 90 minutes.
The CF Electric will be powered by a 210W electric motor, which gets its energy from the lithium-ion battery pack with a current total capacity of 170 kWh.
All vehicles will be manufactured by DAF, with the full electric installation completed by VDL.
The first series of electric trucks will be heading out on trial to major customers in mainland Europe.
A date for full production has not yet been announced, but a DAF spokesman confirmed to CM that this would follow a series of extensive field testing and trials to ensure full reliability of the new technology.
