Rail freight operator DB Schenker is looking at introducing a service in which trailers from HGVs could be placed on to specially designed train wagons. The company says it has set up a review into so-called 'piggyback' rail freight following "renewed interest from a number of customers".
DB Schenker believes the continuing development of the UK rail gauge makes it possible for the piggyback system - which offers a potentially quicker way of switching goods between road and rail than containers - to be developed.
Stuart Boner, managing director of the network segment of DB Schenker Rail (UK), says: "The review of piggyback rail freight services will test the logistics market to establish demand and, subject to the results, the type of piggyback offering DB Schenker will introduce to the market.
"We are working hard to develop innovative solutions for customers to secure road-to-rail conversion during the economic downturn to reduce costs and carbon emissions."
