A lobbyist from the International Road Transport Union (IRU) has said that 'Digitach 2' is on its way as the only long-term solution to the problems of the current model. Hubert Linssen, part of the IRU's permanent delegation to the EU, told the conference that his team is monitoring talks at the European Commission about solutions to problems such as the rounding-up of driving time and the overwriting of driver data.
"The EU has started a project for solving these," Linssen added. "But the only long-term solution will be the rewriting of Annex 1b, the technical spec for the machine." It is not yet clear whether just the software or the hardware will need replacing. "There have been tests in France, the UK and Denmark," he concluded, "and we've shown that trucks lose between 8% and 40% of their productivity if minutes are inaccurately rounded up."
