Michael Spence, the former director of two failed companies - Mike Spence Ltd and Mike Spence Transport Ltd - has applied to become a transport manager at a new haulage firm, according to documents filed at Companies House.

At the same time, Michelle Spence, the former secretary of Warrington-based Mike Spence Ltd, which went into liquidation on 25 September, has submitted an O-licence application to the North-Western Traffic Commissioner for Centurion Logistics.

The proposed transport manager for the new firm, which was incorporated on 5 August, is Michael Spence.

VOSA says the firm applied on 14 October to run four vehicles and five trailers from a proposed operating centre at Taylor Business Park in Risley, Cheshire.

A VOSA spokeswoman says: "The application is linked to an existing O-licence. The application will be considered by the TC in due course."

Mike Spence hit the headlines in August after drivers were left jobless following the shock closure of his company (CM 20 August), which had fallen prey to three acts of theft over nine months (CM 4 June).

It has emerged Michael Spence was previously the director at Mike Spence Transport Ltd, which went into administration on 8 June 2007. Mike Spence Ltd was incorporated on 20 December 2006.
