Two thirds of operators believe that drivers’ opinions of the trucks they drive are an important part of their purchasing strategy.
The results of a poll on Commercialmotor.com, which was responded to by 154 road transport businesses, found that nearly a fifth (18%) believe that driver opinion and acceptance of the brand of truck they drive is crucial to their vehicle acquisition strategy.
Furthermore 31% said driver opinion and acceptance was important, while another 19% said it mattered a little. Less than a third (32%) said that driver opinions were not important.
'Hundreds of hours behind the wheel'
Rikki Chequer, community manager of the UK’s largest online truck driver forum TruckNetUK, said that drivers spend the majority of their working lives in the cab of a truck and employers should take this into account when buying new vehicles.
“For the drivers that use TruckNet UK, nothing is the cause of greater consternation than a truck they are not comfortable either driving or spending time in. They have to spend hundreds of hours behind the wheel, so nothing be more irritating than a truck they do not enjoy driving.
“A happy workforce is a productive workforce, and it is heartening to see that the majority of operators take driver opinions into consideration – but more work needs to be done by drivers, operators and manufacturers alike.”
