Elddis Transport increased both turnover and pre-tax profit last year despite soaring fuel prices in the second half.

The Consett, County Durham firm, which specialises in the FMCG sector, saw pre-tax profit in the year ended 31 December 2010 leap 87% to £529,927 (2009: £283,613) thanks to tight cost control, use of telematics and top-line growth due to new business wins.

Turnover for the year, thanks in part to the expansion of operations along the M62 corridor, increased 6% to £22.8m (2009: £21.5m), according to the latest accounts at Companies House.

Describing the company's performance as satisfactory given the growing cost pressure in the UK transport industry, the directors cite - other than rising fuel prices - reduced availability of sub-contractors as a result of general downsizing and migration from the industry as an issue to address.

Elddis makes the majority of its money from haulage, but also provides warehousing and distribution services. Its vehicle fleet consists of 120, 44-tonne artics and 30, 18-tonne rigids with tail-lifts, operating out of Worksop and Manchester.
