Eminox is warning operators not to bury their heads in the sand prior to the implementation of the next phase of the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) on 3 January 2012, which specifies that every commercial vehicle over 3.5 tonnes must comply with Euro-4 emissions regulations.
According to Kathy Henderson, Eminox marketing manger, those operators who plan to retrofit its Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT), rather than purchase new vehicles, will need to place their orders early in order to avoid disappointment. She explains that a lot of hauliers delayed their purchasing decisions prior to the introduction of the first phase of the London LEZ (February 2008), resulting in a last-minute panic.
"They didn't realise that this is complex emissions control technology, that it's built to order and that it isn't off-the-shelf," she says. The result was that some operators were either unable to operate in the capital, or were forced to pay the £200-a-day charge until their trucks complied.
Companies who invested in Eminox's full-filtration system prior to 2008 will not require any further investment, but those who opted for the cheaper partial-filtration system will need to dip into their pockets again: the average cost of an Eminox CRT is £4,500.
