Ferytrans has specified Hulsteins Ecogen systems on six new CNG-powered Scanias

Ferytrans, the Southampton-based temperature-controlled transport specialist and owner of BigFoot Logistics, has placed a repeat order with Hultsteins for its Ecogen systems. They will be integrated with six new Scania CNG tractors, and will power Ferytrans' existing trailer refrigeration units, significantly reducing its carbon emissions.

Feri Lazar, the MD of Ferytrans, said: "These gas-powered tractors will reduce our carbon emissions by around 80%. Plus, by fitting Ecogen to run the trailer fridges on electric, we will further reduce carbon emissions by around 17 tonnes per vehicle combination per year."

Ferytrans and BigFoot Logistics run a 40-strong Scania tractor fleet, with 65 temperature-controlled trailers. Their clients include retailers and brands such as Amazon, Tesco, and Pork Farms. The newly acquired CNG Scanias will service a contract with customer customer Lidl.

Ecogen operates as an electric-hydraulic drive system that converts diesel fridge units into electric operation when connected to the tractor. It utilises a PTO from the tractor engine to generate a constant 400V of electricity, which powers the built-in electric motor in the fridge during transit. Hultsteins also provides a customised battery pack to ensure continuous operation of the trailer fridge while parked.

According to Graham Usher, Hultsteins’ MD for UK and Ireland, Ecogen Cost Saver enables operators to run their trailer fridge units on electricity, resulting in an approximate 80% reduction in carbon emissions, a 98% reduction in diesel particulate matter (DPM), and a 400% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

Lazar added: "By running the fridge on electric, Ecogen also helps minimise noise during deliveries, which is particularly beneficial in residential areas. The combination of Scania CNG tractors and Hultsteins Ecogen provides the optimum sustainable solution for refrigerated transport."

Ferytrans has made the investment in Ecogen systems, estimating a return on investment (ROI) of approximately 18 months per system. Hultsteins UK offers the Ecogen Cost Saver on an operating lease, with prices starting at £10 per day.
