Fiat has unveiled an all-new electric zero-emission van, based on the Fiorino, which could be destined for the UK. The van, which is built at the Fiat plant in Turkey, and then modified by Italian company Micro-Vett, is powered by a three-phase asynchronous engine that delivers 15kW/30kW.

According to Micro-Vett, this allows it to accelerate from 0km/h to 50km/h in seven seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 80km/h. The lithium batteries - which guarantee a range of more than 100km - can be recharged in six to eight hours from the power grid with a 3kW socket. If a 9kW socket is used, recharging only takes three hours.

The vehicle has a loading capacity of 2.5m3, which becomes 2.8m3 when the fold-down seats are mounted. Payload is only 280kg, and Mico-Vett says the car can negotiate a gradient of 20% fully laden. It is aimed at operators who want to transport small- and medium-sized packages in town centres, or areas where traffic or emissions are restricted.

Michele Ceccucci, operations manager at Micro-Vett, says: "The vehicle will be trialled in Italy before the company thinks about exporting it to other countries in Europe. "This is the sort of van that is ideal for urban delivery driving and we think it is ideally suited to big cities, such as London."

There are no plans to electrify other models in the Fiat range which include the Fiat Ducato, Fiat Scudo and Fiat Doblo.
